MORE INFORMATION
A daughter of the Greek Diaspora in Australia, Melbourne-born
A

nthea Sidiropoulos grew up in a household where politics and music were always present, especially through her father, the late Theo Sidiropoulos, the first Greek migrant to enter Australian Politics. In the '60s and '70s it was the music of the New Wave, with composers Theodorakis, Hatzidakis, Loizos, Hatzis, a social and cultural movement that swept Greece and represented cultural rediscovery and a new seriousness about what it was to be Greek both in Greece and here in Australia. This is what Anthea identified with through her writing connecting with Farantouri, Melina Mercouri, and Joan Baez.   Her performances however are saturated in theatre and storytelling. Her muses Marinella, MaryLinda, Haris Alexiou, to Aretha Frankly, early Tina Turner, Etta James and the story of Janis Joplin over the years has lead her to become the seasoned performer she is.

Anthea's musical endeavours began in contemporary music of rock, pop, funk and blues. A serious illness and too close a contact with death led her in a new direction – into the music of her family, her roots, her spirit, her songwriting and composing melodies of an ambient nature, taking herself as a songwriter and co-composer Achilles Yiangouli, as finalists in the MusicOZ songwriting competition of 2001 and previously, finalists in the ASA songwriting competition and the Antipodes Song Festival. Anthea self released some of her favourite songs in a Greek debut CD 'Epistrophé' Full Circle in 2001 launched at the Boite (Vic). With a music career now spanning 25 years, and after a 7year hiatus, Anthea is back to stay on the music scene for as long as it will have her... Her songs are full of life and story telling - like the time she was researching for her role in the Music of Janis Joplin and ended up on a roadtrip to San Fransisco with Janis's long serving guitarist Sam Andrew, performing four shows in his band - to enjoying a long life Pearl The Janis Joplin Show in Melbourne, and around Australia.. fast forward to January 2024 for International Women's Day another song "I am woman I am she, Imme Gynékka Imme aftí, re arranged in the blues genre style won Anthea a semifinalist position in the blues category at the International Songwriting Competition.
