5THE GOLDEN OLYMPIAN WHO RUN THE
MARATHON BAREFOOT
A tribute to the greatest,
perhaps, marathon runner of all time, Abebe
Bikila.
On the occasion of the
marathon race at the Paris Olympics where the
Ethiopian TamratTola won it with a new Olympic
record, as a tribute, a tribute to the greatest,
perhaps, marathon runner of all time..
Abebe Bikila the pride of
Ethiopia
Abebe Bikila Amharic:
አረም ቢትም; August 7, 1932 –
October 25, 1973) was an Ethiopian marathon
runner, who subsequently became a double Olympic
champion. He was the first Ethiopian Olympic
champion, winning his first gold medal at the
1960 Summer Olympics in Rome while running
barefoot. The entire sports world was left
speechless and at the same time in
uncontrollable admiration.. it was the sports
theme of the time. It is worth noting that the
temperature was 38 degrees and the asphalt was
literally boiling.. he undauntedly ran with his
characteristic beautiful style and long stride.
Then, at the 1964 Tokyo
Olympics, he won his second gold medal, making
him the first athlete to successfully defend a
double Olympic title, one after the other in the
Marathon. In both victories he ran in a world
record time.
Abebe started out as a
soldier in the imperial guard of Emperor Haile
Selassie.. as an athlete he was discovered by
the Swedish army coach Nils Niscanen, who saw
his great talent and prepared him for the
Olympic Games in Rome in 1960..
After his victory, he
largely inspired the supremacy of East Africa in
the long-distance race. According to Kenny
Moore, a contemporary athlete and Sports
Illustrated writer, "the great African avalanche
of long-distance running" began.
Now Captain Bikila, a title
bestowed on him by Emperor Haile Selassie, was
unfortunately paralyzed after a car accident..
this did not deter him and he took up archery
where he won gold in the very Olympic games.
And a personal experience
of mine.. in the late fifties I was watching a
football match at the only stadium in Addis
Ababa.. they had announced early on that the
finish of the marathon would take place during
the match.. for this purpose they had invited
athletes from the Soviet Union "to train with
the Ethiopians and at the same time "to teach
them how to run". During the match the first
athlete enters but to everyone's great surprise
he was not Russian but Ethiopian.. soon followed
by a second, third, fourth total of 10 athletes
from Ethiopia.. we looked at each other in
surprise coming to the conclusion that the
Ethiopian runners started earlier than the
Soviets.. it can't be otherwise we said to each
other.. after ten minutes the first Soviet
enters sweating and the microphone announces "
The Soviet runner finishes eleventh what
happened in the stadium is indescribable.. pure
earthquake!
Then the medals were
awarded.. from then on it became clear what
potential Ethiopian runners had worldwide in
general in long distances.
